Doctor’s orders since she can’t figure out what’s wrong with me today.

Thankfully most of my deductible for the year has been covered; if this was January I’d be screwed, financially speaking. May be appendicitis, but they don’t know yet. This has been a hellish week at work, and when you combine that with the sharp stabbing pains I’ve been enjoying it’s just the icing on the cake. I was hoping for a quiet few days of bed rest, but at this point I just hope I can do that at home...

Going in to the ER is that last thing you want to do for an ongoing condition unless you are indigent and have no other source of health care.  I don’t understand.

Last time it was for a diverticulitis attack after a stop at urgent care (Dr didn’t have any appointments). Today I went to my normal doctors office, but they sent me over hear for lab work and possible ultrasound or CT scan. I wouldn’t come here unless it was an emergency, unlike those that treat the ER as their primary source of care. I could do a lot better with the $150 a pop (starting) that a stop in here sets me back.

I dis use the ER about 6 years ago, back in California, when I was unemployed, flat broke and soon to be evicted. That wasn’t by choice as I really needed help, and these last two have been at my doctor's request.

Thanks for the kind words, everyone. It’s been a mildly weird experience so far (bizarre faucet, first time I’ve been asked to clean my junk before giving a sample, no coat hook so my jacket rested in the garbage can, etc.). But I don’t exactly live in the fanciest section of town so none of this surprises me. Years ago I’d ride for hours and hours to get to a good hospital in a wealthy neighborhood, knowing that the same deductible would get me better treatment, sad as it is to say.

I do wish I had a nose clip as the stench of urine is making me ill. But I’m already ill so, well, whatever...

I wonder how many people rush to the hospital in december just to ensure they are covered within the deductible. I think deductibles are stupid for health insurance. It means that I will never use it unless I am literally going to die otherwise. Since I would never hit the deductible under normal scenarios.

No, I’m sure you wouldn’t. It strikes me as unusual that your doctor would send you to an ER during normal business hours especially since  the copay is higher. But hey, I hope you feel better soon.

That’s the point of a deductible , and why high deductible plans are cheaper. Same thing with car insurance, a $500 deducti ble pretty much ensures I won’t be calling the insurance company unless it’s totaled.

Yeah, I asked my wife, and she thinks they sent him there because they’re suspecting an a cute condition that might need surgical intervention.  That makes sense, since it’s possibly than just routine lab work.
